Aim of the conference: to provide a continuous platform for researchers, practitioners and policy-makers to exchange information and ideas about new developments and pressing issues on the science and practice of ecosystem services (and to strengthen the partnership).

Mornings are reserved for: Plenary keynotes, Special sessions & Invited presentations:

  1. The first morning will introduce the conference aims with keynotes from three perspectives: the science and practice of ecosystem services, and how to link the two through appropriate policies.
  2. On the 2nd and 3rd mornings the conference topics (see workshops) will be introduced in more detail while on the last morning (4th day) invited stakeholders will present and discuss the main incentives and obstacles involved in bridging the gap between Science and Practice on Ecosystem Services.


Afternoons: are reserved for Workshops where participants can present their work, and discuss specific problems and potential solutions on:

  1. Quantifying, mapping, and modeling of ecosystem services (incl. selection of ES indicators)
  2. Valuation of ES and use in trade-off analysis and other decision support systems
  3. Use of ES in planning & management: concepts, tools and guidelines
  4. Financing mechanisms for ES, including business opportunities and economic instruments
  5. Role of ES in policy making and institutional aspects (incl. networking and communication)
  6. Case studies on the practical use of ES in planning and management.

Post Graduate & ESP Professional Training Course (2-9 October 2011)

This course is organized by the Research School for Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE, and the Graduate School Production Ecology and Resource Conservation (PE&RC, in collaboration with the Institute for Environmental Studies (IvM) of the VU University of Amsterdam on the topic “Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Services: from theory to practice”. The course will start Sunday evening 2nd of October and end Sunday-afternoon 9th October and is open to both PhD-students and other interested participants.
